Emergency personnel responded to reports Monday evening that a swimmer was struggling in Lake Superior off the shore near the Fitger's Complex where a sailing ship loomed in the backdrop.

The Department of Natural Resources confirmed that a man had been helped out of the water by a passing boat before he was handed off to the DNR. He did not receive immediate medical attention.

Dixie Erickson was sitting at a picnic table near Bridgeman's when she saw a head bobbing about 30 feet out from the shore. She said she called 911.

"I'm not even from here and I know that water's cold," she said, adding that it looked like he was swimming out to meet one of the tall ships.

DNR conservation officer Kip Duncan said the man was released to the Duluth Police Department at the shore.
