Rep. Pete Stauber on Tuesday introduced a bill that would require any wall or barrier on the U.S.-Mexico border be built with American iron and steel.
The Hermantown Republican said in a news release the American Workers for Security Act would “ensure a project as large and important as the construction of the barrier at the southern border is done with steel made from iron ore and taconite mined right here in northern Minnesota.”
The American Iron and Steel Institute said the bill is “consistent with long standing policies that all of the iron and steel used in federally-funded infrastructure projects must be produced in the United States.”
President Donald Trump last month declared a national emergency in order to secure funding for a border wall after Congress declined to do so.
