It's time for George W. Bush dictatorship to come to an end

In his address to the VFW in Kansas City on Aug. 21, President Bush made the following statement about Iraqi Prime Minister Nourial-Maliki: "It's not up to the politicians in Washington, D.C., to say whether he will remain in his position. It is up to the Iraqi people who now live in a democracy and not a dictatorship."

I suggest the U.S. apply that same philosophy. It's up to the American people to decide whether our president should remain in office.

Let me be the first to bid him farewell -- and the sooner the better, while we still have a democracy.

An open mind is important, which religion seems to stunt

Why is there so much hate in the world? Religion. Societies based on religious doctrine have been responsible for the majority of the woes of the world, I feel. Man's inhumanity toward man is justified by many of today's religious fanatics. If you don't believe as you're told from the day you enter this world, or if you question why you must believe, you can be ostracized by the majority of sheep following the myth.

The same goes for questioning the omnipotent decisions of leaders in Washington, D.C.

To free thinkers who question their belief system and question the present government, I recommend the movie "Zeitgeist." It contains a wealth of answers.

Everyone should keep an open mind and start asking questions. This is vital for a healthy democracy.

St. Louis County Board is so bad, another letter is in order

I swore I would never write to the paper again, but this St. Louis County Board is unbelievable.

If County Commissioner Mike Forsman is not able to tell whether he's glaring or ogling at a woman, maybe he shouldn't be on the board ("County will craft code," Sept. 5).

The good-ol'-boys network has been going on for a long time. I believe these good ol' boys are intimidated by a strong woman. It's hard to believe: Wearing sunglasses?! That said a lot about Forsman's intelligence, I feel.

It's just sad we have to wait so long to vote out some of these commissioners. Their actions are disgusting and an insult to the intelligence of voters. The ladies of St. Louis County need to hang in there; what goes around will come around.

Dragon Boat Festival deserves more coverage

It was really disappointing on the morning of Sunday, Aug. 26 to see no coverage in the News Tribune about the Lake Superior Dragon Boat Festival ("Racing to the beat on a dragon," Aug. 25). The event includes a lot of participation from local and traveling organizations. It's a huge fund-raising sporting event for the Duluth-Superior area. Seems like a big missed opportunity to promote community pride.

Ness is best choice of two remaining candidates

The irrelevant politics of this mayoral race are now officially over! I truly believe the two remaining candidates are running for the right reasons. Both have worked hard in this community over the years and both believe in a bright future for Duluth. That's great!

Now the question really needs to be, who can get the job done?

For me it's an easy choice. Don Ness is the right choice for mayor. Here is why: Ness is a natural leader. He leads by example, he is a positive person, especially when you talk to him about Duluth and its future. I've seen Ness get tough on issues, but he's always fair and respectful. Ness is extremely bright, he understands the critical issues concerning our city right now. He also has a sense of urgency regarding these issues.

Ness will not pander to any business, any particular group or anyone. He's honest. Ness makes decisions that he feels will benefit our community as a whole based on facts and common sense. These are the qualities we need in a mayor, and Don Ness is the right choice for steering the S.S. Duluth into the future! Get out and vote!
