Reader's view: Miernicki, Westholm bring experience, commitment

Voters in the Duluth school district have an opportunity on Nov. 8 to elect two excellent first-time candidates steeped in public education and committed to assuring the best possible education for all students.

They are At Large candidate Mike Miernicki and Bill Westholm, seeking the 3rd District seat.

The experience of both in their former careers as teachers and administrators in the Duluth schools is impressive. It's hard to imagine better-qualified candidates.

Miernicki, uniquely, straddles the entire city in his personal and professional background. A native of Lincoln Park and a Denfeld graduate, he spent much of his career at East High School as teacher, adviser to student government and activities director. I have a personal reason for my confidence in him: He was an influential mentor to my son at East.

Westholm's roots in Duluth also go deep. While he has served at all three high schools, as well as director of school operations in central administration, Westholm has spent much of his career where he was born, raised and continues to reside: in the western Duluth district he seeks to serve.

Now residing in Hermantown, I regret I can't vote for these two highly qualified candidates.
