United Way of Greater Duluth and True North AmeriCorps are joining forces with local nonprofit after-school programs to improve the academic success of young people in the community. The Reader, Tutor, Mentor Program will launch in September 2014 to recruit and train local volunteers. Volunteers will work with pre-K to 12th graders in the areas of reading, math and career exploration.
Volunteers commit to a four-month minimum time frame, spending anywhere from one to three hours per week in their selected position. Readers participate in weekly reading and literacy activities; tutors provide homework help targeting reading and math; mentors plan and lead academic activities.
After volunteers receive training, they will be placed at one of the eight partner agencies: Boys and Girls Clubs of the Northland, Kid's Café-Damiano Center, Myers-Wilkins Community School Collaborative, Neighborhood Youth Services, Valley Youth Center, YMCA and YWCA.
