Light rain started falling in Duluth before 9 a.m. today with some roads and sidewalks already glazing with ice.

Road crews were out in advance of the storm, spreading salt to prevent the freezing rain from bonding to the roads. Still, slippery roads and walkways were reported across the Twin Ports.

The National Weather Service in Duluth said the freezing rain may let up or stop in some areas this morning. But the rain will resume even heavier this afternoon and evening.

Rain will fall through warm air aloft and then freeze near and on the ground, and more than a half-inch of ice may build up in some areas by Tuesday, especially along higher elevations above Lake Superior.

An ice storm warning is in effect into Tuesday for most of St. Louis, Carlton, Lake and Cook counties with a freezing-rain advisory for the rest of the Northland.

Most Twin Ports area school districts are closed for the day and that could happen again Tuesday.

Rain will increase in intensity into the evening and continue overnight before turning to snow on Tuesday.

The freezing rain could be heavy enough to build up on branches and power lines, causing electrical outages. And if rain falls long enough it is likely too pool up in low-lying area, unable to drain through frozen storm sewers, culverts and ditches.
