To protest the fifth anniversary of "enemy combatants" being de-tained by the U.S. at a facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, demonstrators in Duluth plan a silent procession from the corner of Superior Street and Lake Avenue to the Federal Building at 11:30 a.m. Thursday.
The activities are part of a larger national protest calling for the closure of the prison and fair hearings for about 400 people being held in Guantanamo Bay.
The march will culminate in a noon vigil and rally on the steps of the Federal Building, 515 W. First St. Speakers will include Bret Thiele, an international human rights lawyer and member of Amnesty International's board of directors.
Michele Naar-Obed of Duluth will travel to Washington, D.C., to participate in a simultaneous larger demonstration.
Some protesters plan to dress as prisoners.

"So many people have been held at Guantanamo and made invisible," Naar-Obed said. "This is a symbolic way to bring them out of the darkness and to recognize that they are human beings with human rights."
