The stretch of Interstate 35 that ends in Duluth will be named to honor longtime 8th District Congressman James Oberstar, if a bill approved by a U.S. House committee on Wednesday ultimately becomes law.
Introduced by U.S. Rep. Rick Nolan, D-Crosby, the legislation would name I-35 from Forest Lake, Minn., to Duluth “The James L. Oberstar Memorial Highway,” a news release from Nolan’s office said. It was approved by the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, on which Oberstar served during his 18 terms in Congress. Nolan, who also represents the 8th District, is a member of the committee.
Every member of the Minnesota congressional delegation co-sponsored the bill with Nolan, the news release said. It awaits passage in the full House.
Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken, both D-Minn., are shepherding the bill through the Senate.
Oberstar, who died May 3, was a stalwart proponent of the nation’s interstate highway system for decades, Nolan said.
