Prep Report: Superior wins boys hockey opener

Tyler Plunkett, Daniel Litchke and Mitch Kontny each scored two goals as Superior defeated Rice Lake 9-2 in a high school boys hockey nonconference season opener Thursday at Rice Lake.

Kontny added two assists for the Spartans, who outshot their opponent 34-14.

Duluth East 2, Maple Grove 1

Kenny Mellin's goal with 2:26 left in the third period lifted the Greyhounds to the nonconference road win.

Cloquet-Esko-Carlton 3

Courtney Esse's short-handed goal with 35 seconds remaining in the third period gave the host Lumberjacks a tie with the Northern Stars in a Lake Superior Conference game.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Northwestern 72, Washburn 47

The Tigers, minus star guard Steve Tecker, topped the Castle Guards in the first round of the Donavon Mackey Tournament in Maple.

Tecker, the 2009 News Tribune All-Area Player of the Year, is out for the season after hip surgery. Donnie Hissa led four Tigers in double figures with 14 points.

The matchup between the schools was the first in 10 years since Northwestern rallied from a 4-0 fourth-quarter deficit to win 5-4 in what likely was the lowest-scoring game in state history.

Duluth East 68, Cloquet 36

Ten Greyhounds scored in a season-opening home victory. Elsa Lee led with 12 points and nine rebounds.

Esko 63, Floodwood 60

Keely Deadrick scored 22 points and Amanda Bergstedt added 18 as the visiting Eskomos won the Polar League game.

FOOTBALL

Henderson of Cretin-Derham Hall voted player of year

Cretin-Derham Hall's Seantrel Henderson, a

6-foot-8, 330-pound senior left tackle, was named the Minnesota Associated Press Player of the Year in football.

Henderson completed a prolific career with Cretin-Derham Hall with a Class AAAAA state championship. Henderson and teammate Shea Walker helped block for a powerful offense led by quarterback Mark Alt that amassed well over 5,000 yards this season.

Henderson has not decided on a college.
