Prep report: No. 3 Hermantown falls in St. Cloud in boys hockey

St. Cloud Cathedral, ranked No. 6 in Class A, shut down Hermantown's high-powered offense in a 2-1 high school boys hockey nonconference victory over the third-ranked Hawks on Monday night in St. Cloud, Minn.

St. Cloud Cathedral, ranked No. 6 in Class A, shut down Hermantown's high-powered offense in a 2-1 high school boys hockey nonconference victory over the third-ranked Hawks on Monday night in St. Cloud, Minn.

The Hawks (15-2) entered the game averaging six goals a game but didn't score until Grant Huttel tallied at 12:11 of the third period.

Hawks goaltender Ben Tessier stopped 31 shots -- including 17 in the second period -- allowing goals to Robbie Stocker and Alex Koopmeiners.

Girls basketball

Esko 64, Hermantown 63

The visiting Hawks missed two free throws and a shot in the lane in the final 10 seconds to lose to the Eskomos (15-1) for the second time this season.

Roz Chromy led Esko with 26 points and nine rebounds, while Amanda Bergstedt chipped in with 16 points and made four 3-pointers.

Kaylee Steen led Hermantown (11-4) with 15 points, and teammates Nicole Niemi and Jessica Love each had 14.

Hayward 61, Northwestern 54

The Hurricanes took over first place in the Heart O'North Conference with the win at Maple.

Morgan Lee led Hayward with 16 points and Samantha Quandt added 14. Lindsay Taipale led the Tigers (8-3, 7-1) with 18 points.

Two Harbors 44, Mountain Iron-Buhl 39

Despite losing leading scorer Abby Ray to foul trouble for most of the game, the host Agates handed the Rangers (11-2) their second loss of the season.

Nina Bukowski and Sierra Tietge each scored 14 points for Two Harbors.

Carlton 39, Cherry 22

The host Bulldogs (11-4) held the Tigers to three points in the first half en route to their 10th victory in the past 11 games.

Boys basketball

East Central 75, Carlton 50

Ben Del Greco scored 24 points and made four 3-pointers to lead the Eagles to the nonconference win at Sandstone.

Wrenshall 53, Isle 48

Jordan Berglund scored 18 points and made two free throws with 5 seconds left to ice the nonconference victory for the host Wrens (8-3).
