Prep report: Grand Rapids wrestlers fall in state quarterfinals

Grand Rapids seniors Kurt Ehrhorn and Eric Enerson lost quarterfinal matches Thursday in the Minnesota Class AA high school wrestling meet at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

Grand Rapids seniors Kurt Ehrhorn and Eric Enerson lost quarterfinal matches Thursday in the Minnesota Class AA high school wrestling meet at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

Ehrhorn (18-1) lost to David Thorn of St. Michael-Albertville 9-5 in a 125-pound match.

Enerson (33-6) fell in a 135-pound match to Joe Selly of Montgomery Lonsdale-Le Center in a 5-2 decision.

Will Johnson of Hibbing (160) and A.J. Arntz of Virginia Area (171) also lost in Class AA quarterfinal contests Thursday.

Pogue in second

Chisholm senior Danny Pogue is in second place after the Minnesota Class A diving semifinals Thursday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis.

Turner Eckstrom of Red Wing is in first with 307.15 points, while Pogue has 304.45.

Girls Basketball

Duluth East 63, Coon Rapids 49

Marisa Yernatich scored 21 points to lead the host Greyhounds past the Cardinals in a Section 7AAAA quarterfinal game.

East (16-11) expanded on a 24-20 halftime lead and will play the Forest Lake/Blaine winner at 8 p.m. Wednesday in North Branch.

Mesabi East 45, Two Harbors 40

Jessie Larson scored 17 points, Kaeley Whiting added 15, and the Giants (13-12) won the Section 7AA first-round home game.

Barnum 54, Cromwell 18

Katrina Newman's 31 points aided the Bombers in the Section 5A quarterfinal home win.

Ely 45, Cook 40

Tomi McDonald registered a game-high 24 points to lead the Timberwolves in the Section 7A second-round game.

Boys Basketball

Duluth Denfeld 66, Hibbing 62

Ben Hayes scored 26 points to boost the Hunters (5-19), who ended the Bluejackets five-game winning streak.

Hibbing's leading scorers were Georde Marchand (17) and Jay Cary (16).

Duluth Marshall 62, Cromwell 49

Mike Carlson scored 18 points as the Hilltoppers (13-10) jumped out to a 35-22 halftime lead and cruised to the home win.

Orry Engebretsen, Doug Frey and Jon Schoessow also scored in double figures for Marshall, winners of four straight.

Grand Rapids 54, Duluth Central 50

The Thunderhawks (10-13) outscored the Trojans 25-19 in the second half to win the road game.

Garth Heikkinen scored 30 points for Central (12-11).

Barnum 71, Wrenshall 59

Curtis Houle scored 24 and Josh Earlywine had 23 to boost the Bombers (21-3, 14-2 Polar League) into first place in the conference.
