PREP REPORT: Cambridge rallies past Rapids in Section 7AAA Final Four

Top seed Cambridge-Isanti defeated No. 3 seed Grand Rapids 6-5 in a come-from-behind victory in a Section 7AAA Final Four baseball double-elimination game Tuesday in Cambridge, Minn.

The Bluejackets scored three runs in the sixth inning to tie the game 5-5, and Matt Duong's bases-loaded sacrifice fly with one out in the bottom of the seventh scored Sam Solberg for the game-winning run.

Grand Rapids (21-2) faces Duluth East (19-5) in an elimination game Thursday in Cambridge, with the winner meeting Cambridge-Isanti (22-1) for the section title.

Duluth East 2, Andover 0

Skyler Murray earned a shutout victory, pitching six innings and allowing four hits as East advanced to the Section 7AAA Final Four in Cambridge.

Murray also had two hits with a triple and RBI.

Duluth East 5,Forest Lake 0

Jon Tisak posted East's second shutout of the day, throwing a complete game with two strikeouts on five hits.

Tisak had three doubles, while Adam Zwak and Murray each had extra-base hits.

Tennis

Marshall, East fall

Duluth Marshall and Duluth East were eliminated Tuesday in the Minnesota boys team tournament.

No. 5-ranked Thief River Falls edged No. 8 Marshall 4-3 in the Class A quarterfinals at the Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center in Minneapolis.

Winning for Marshall in singles were junior Willie Paul at No. 2 and ninth-grader Matt Goldschmidt at No. 3; and, in doubles, senior Peter Bussa and Dan Letourneau.

No. 7 Foley stopped Marshall 4-3 in the consolation semifinals.

No. 4 Elk River beat East 5-2 in the Class AA quarterfinals at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis. Doubles teams winning for East were senior Josh Sande and junior Jake Tideman, and Andy Welinski and junior Hans Sandholm.

No. 3 Rochester Mayo defeated the Greyhounds 6-1 in the consolation semifinals.

Golf

Grozdanich sits in ninth

Grand Rapids junior Meagan Grozdanich shot a 6-over-par 79 for ninth place after the first round of the Class AAA girls tournament at Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids, Minn.

Woodbury led with 345 strokes, with Forest Lake of Section 7 one stroke back.

The Rangers beat Grand Rapids by three strokes in the Section 7 meet May 26.

Also from Grand Rapids were Mikki Kromy (86), Katie Casper (88) and Ellen Liebe (100).

Duluth East freshman Tabitha Kunst shot 88 and was tied for 36th.

Boys

Duluth East's Troy Klongerbo shot a 6-over-par 78 and classmate Nate Anderson had an 82 in the Class AAA boys tournament.

Alexandria senior Gordy Diekman led at 2-under 70, while Park of Cottage Grove held a one-shot advantage over Chaska and Edina.

The final round of the boys and girls tournament begins this morning.
