A major power outage knocked out electricity to much of central Duluth for nearly an hour late Sunday night.

The outage, which started at about 10 p.m. and ended just before 11 p.m., affected about 3,400 customers in central Duluth at its peak, according to Minnesota Power's online outage reporting system. Downtown Duluth, the Hillside and Observation Hill were among the areas affected.

Smaller outages were reported in other parts of Duluth and Superior. News Tribune readers reported lights flickering in several neighborhoods

The News Tribune office in downtown Duluth was among the buildings affected by the outage. The outage also knocked television channels WDIO, KBJR and KDLH off the air for a time, according to their Facebook pages.

There was no immediate word on the cause of the major outage from Minnesota Power officials. However, Sunday's night's snow was accompanied by thunder and lightning at times.
