Duluth police say they've identified four people who are believed to be responsible for breaking windows at the former Ordean Middle School, causing up to about $10,000 in damage.

Three adult men and one young woman under age 18 admitted their involvement in the incident last week, according to police. All four are from Duluth, but police have not yet released their names.

"When the investigation into the incident is completed, the case will be submitted to the County Attorney's office for charges," police said in a prepared statement. "This is not expected to happen until after the holidays."

Police said their investigation was aided by information provided by the public.

At least eight windows were broken, including four large picture windows in the school's former media center. Kerry Leider, the Duluth Public Schools' manager of facilities, said the "preliminary estimate is that the damage will approach or exceed $10,000."

He's hopeful those responsible for the vandalism will be forced to pay for the damage they caused. Leider pointed out that the school has a $10,000 deductible in its insurance policy.

"If there is restitution, that would help us not have to compromise our project as a result of this incident."

Police received a report at about 12:30 a.m. Friday of a white sport-utility vehicle near Ordean and four people -- three males and one female -- hitting golf balls.

The damage was not discovered until workers transforming Ordean into Duluth's new eastern high school arrived for their shifts later Friday morning.
