MINNEAPOLIS -- Police turned out in force Tuesday night to deal with a large public disturbance in downtown Minneapolis.
Police said the unrest was caused by a large group of youths who rode mass transit into downtown with the intention of causing trouble. The disturbance, which involved hundreds of people and began about 6:30 p.m., was centered in an area along Nicollet Mall between Third and Eighth streets.
By a 10 p.m. news conference, police said that officers had largely dispersed the troublemakers and restored order in the area.
Police later said there had been a handful of arrests and that two people were treated for minor injuries.
A shooting was being investigated downtown, but police said it was some distance from the scene of the disturbance. The victim suffered injuries that weren’t considered life-threatening.

Police said there wasn’t any indication the disturbance was related to the St. Patrick’s Day parade held on Nicollet Mall earlier in the day.
