Alcohol may have been a contributing factor in a rollover accident off a Bong Bridge overpass Monday night.

According to a Superior police report, a male driver of a pickup was driving east on the Bong Bridge. As the road turns into an overpass at Susquehanna Avenue, the driver veered off the right side of the road, crashed through a guardrail, rolled down the hill and crashed through a chain link fence.

The vehicle continued down the hill and came to a rest on its passenger side on Susquehanna Avenue. Superior firefighters were called to the scene at 8:05 p.m. Monday, Battalion Chief Steve Edwards said. They extricated the man from the car and placed him on a backboard. First responders reported that the man smelled of alcohol. When questioned in the ambulance, he said he had been drinking.

The man was uncooperative toward officers and yelled profanities at the first responders trying to help him, according to the report. He was transported to a hospital in Duluth, where he continued to be loud, profane and combative, police said. He was strapped down to a hospital bed due to his combative behavior.

The truck was totaled, and it is unknown how many times the vehicle rolled over.
