Anticipated below zero temperatures, plus arctic wind chills, have prompted zoo officials to close the Lake Superior Zoo to the public on Saturday Jan. 19 and Sunday Jan. 20.
While polar bear, Siberian tigers and snow leopards are quite comfortable in the freezing temps, most zoo animals and zoo visitors are not. Therefore the closing on the zoo to the public during this January cold-snap makes sense. Zookeepers are taking extra precautions to ensure that all of the animals at the Lake Superior Zoo are well cared for this weekend. Most will be kept indoors and off exhibit.
The zoo will reopen to the public on Monday, Jan. 21. For more information, call 730-4500 during regular business hours.
The zoo is located at 71st Avenue West and Grand Avenue in West Duluth. The Lake Superior Zoo is a division of the city of Duluth, Parks and Recreation Department.
The zoo is located at 72nd Avenue West and Grand Avenue in Duluth and is open 7 days a week from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. throughout the winter months.
