By now, it must be known to everyone in Minnesota -- and certainly those who have the need to light up -- that the statewide smoking ban goes into effect today. As of now, and not some vague point in the future, smoking is banned in restaurants, bars, private clubs and other establishments under the "Freedom to Breathe Act," passed by the Legislature and signed into law by Gov. Tim Pawlenty in May. Duluth state Rep. Tom Huntley was a particularly effective force in working for the ban -- for years -- and finally getting it passed.
Yes, Indian casinos are exempt, as are family farms and the cabs of heavy trucks. True also, Wisconsin is just across the bridge and Superior's bars are not affected by Minnesota's laws.
But think about it: Are you really going to hail a semi for an emergency enclosure in which to take a puff, or in which to hitch a ride over the Blatnik or the Bong to get to the Badger-you-for-a-cigarette State?
Smoking also still is allowed in private homes, and as everyone entering an office building knows, on most sidewalks. With heed to the warnings of Smokey the Bear, it's still a permitted pastime in the great outdoors. It's not the end of the world for Minnesota smokers.
But it is hoped that the campaign will lead to the end of their smoking careers, which can only mean better, more productive and, most of all, longer lives for thousands of Minnesotans. No arguing with the benefits of that, and no butts about it.
