Food Farm in Wrenshall will host an open house this afternoon to show off progress on its innovative root cellar.
The “Root Cellar-bration” will take place from 1-5 p.m. at the farm, at 2612 County Road 1 near Wrenshall in Carlton County. There will be tours of the root cellar and the farm.
The organic farm is seeking the public’s help to complete construction of its expanded, 3,700-square-foot root cellar to improve storage capacity for its produce, as well as produce from other farms in the area.
“Stored produce runs out in late winter, leaving a gap of several months until the next growing season,” Food Farm’s Janaki Fisher-Merritt said in a news release last month. “We can fix that with a new root cellar. ... The design is different than a traditional root cellar in that it combines modern insulation and climate-control technology with an interior environment that meets food safety standards, all while being much more energy-efficient than a typical cooler.”
An online Kickstarter fundraising campaign is underway for several more days; find more details at facebook.com/foodfarmcsa.
