Face First -- Mary Gavitt, left, counselor at Portman Park, and Garrett Cora, 11, led the charge for team Portman in a watermelon eating contest Thursday at Park Point beach, part of the annual sand modeling competition held by Duluth Parks & Recreation. The day belonged to Chester Bowl, however, as 15-year-old Kyle Freundschuh took home the watermelon trophy, and the park also won first place in the sand modeling competition with a 20-foot lobster. Three-hundred-fifty kids from nearly a dozen local parks participated in the day's events, and devoured nearly 100 watermelons in the process. No major stomach aches were reported.
