Northland weather information, photos and history

If you were up and about early this morning, you may have seen or heard some pretty strong wind gusts in the Twin Ports. The National Weather Service reports the wind gusts in excess of 50 mph hit the area about 6 a.m. – caused by a “wake low,” an area of sudden falling surface pressure that formed behind the storms that passed through a short while earlier.

The Weather Service has much more information about the phenomenon here .

The greatest wind gust reported was just over 57 mph at the Blatnik Bridge. The Duluth International Airport saw a gust of almost 52 mph, with 44 mph gusts reported on Park Point. There were no immediate reports of damage.

We’ll see more windy conditions across the region overnight into Friday. Northwest winds are forecast to strengthen to 20 to 30 mph – with higher gusts possible – late tonight and on Friday. Gale warnings and small craft advisories are in effect for Lake Superior.
