The crew at the National Weather Service’s Duluth office have compiled the local weather stats for August, and also provide a look ahead to what we can expect in September. Here’s what they have to say (note that our average low temperature will slip to 40 degrees by month’s end!):

AUGUST 2010 WAS WARMER AND WETTER THAN NORMAL AT DULUTH MN.

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR AUGUST WAS 68.1 DEGREES WHICH WAS 4.4 DEGREES WARMER THAN THE NORMAL OF 63.7 DEGREES. THIS TIES THE RECORD FOR THE 8TH WARMEST AUGUST IN RECORDED HISTORY. THE HIGHEST TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH WAS 89 DEGREES ON THE 9TH. THE LOWEST TEMPERATURE WAS 46 DEGREES ON THE 17TH. NO TEMPERATURE RECORDS WERE SET FOR THE MONTH.

AUGUST 2010 WAS ABOVE NORMAL FOR PRECIPITATION WITH A TOTAL OF 6.39 INCHES RECORDED FOR THE MONTH MAKING THIS THE 15TH WETTEST AUGUST IN STATION HISTORY. THIS IS 2.17 INCHES ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 4.22 INCHES. THE GREATEST AMOUNT OF PRECIPITATION IN A 24 HOUR PERIOD OCCURRED ON THE 1ST TO THE 2ND WHEN 1.66 INCHES WAS REPORTED. AT LEAST A TRACE OF RAIN WAS REPORTED ON 17 DAYS. AT LEAST 0.01 INCHES OF RAIN FELL ON 13 DAYS. AT LEAST 0.10 INCHES FELL ON 10 DAYS. AT LEAST 0.50 INCHES FELL ON 7 DAYS. AT LEAST 1.00 INCHES FELL ON 1 DAY. NO DAILY PRECIPITATION RECORDS WERE SET DURING THE MONTH OF AUGUST.

THE AVERAGE WIND SPEED FOR THE MONTH WAS 9.1 MPH. THE WINDIEST DAY FOR THE MONTH WAS ON THE 15TH WITH AN AVERAGE WIND SPEED OF 19.0 MPH. THE GREATEST SUSTAINED WINDS OCCURRED ON THE 15TH AND 16TH WITH A WIND OUT OF THE WEST AT 30 MPH ON BOTH DAYS. THERE WAS A PEAK GUST OF 43 MPH FROM THE WEST RECORDED ON THE 16TH. THERE WERE 38 HEATING DEGREE DAYS FOR THE MONTH WHICH WAS 68 BELOW THE NORMAL OF 106...THIS BROUGHT THE SEASONAL TOTAL TO 42 WHICH WAS 133 BELOW THE NORMAL OF 175. THERE WERE 143 COOLING DEGREE DAYS FOR THE MONTH WHICH WAS 83 DEGREES ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 60. THE SEASONAL TOTAL COOLING DEGREE DAYS WERE 310 WHICH IS 133 DEGREES ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 177. THE HIGHEST BAROMETRIC PRESSURE READING FOR THE MONTH WAS 30.21 INCHES REACHED ON THE 26TH AND THE LOWEST BAROMETRIC PRESSURE READING WAS 29.61 INCHES REACHED ON THE 13TH.

THE OUTLOOK FOR SEPTEMBER...NORMAL HIGHS BEGIN AT 70 DEGREES ON THE 1ST AND COOL TO THE UPPER 50S AT THE END OF THE MONTH. NORMAL LOWS RANGE FROM 50 DEGREES ON THE 1ST AND COOL TO 40 DEGREES ON THE 30TH. NORMAL PRECIPITATION FOR SEPTEMBER IS 4.13 INCHES. NORMAL SNOWFALL FOR SEPTEMBER IS 0.1 INCHES. NEAR NORMAL TEMPERATURES AND ABOVE NORMAL PRECIPITATION ARE EXPECTED IN SEPTEMBER.
