The Rev. Russell Markkula went to his heavenly home Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008. He was born Sept. 14, 1920, to Frank and Wilhelmina Markkula in Waukegan, Ill.

Russell graduated from Waukegan High School in 1938 and subsequently attended the University of Illinois Urbana.

He was on a picnic with friends on Dec. 7, 1941, and became engaged that day to Marian Bauer of Zion, Ill. They were married Aug. 1, 1942, at Fort Benning, Ga., and recently celebrated their 66th anniversary. Russell entered the Army and served in World War II as a first lieutenant. After returning from New Guinea, where he was stationed, he received his degree in metallurgical engineering.

Russ and Marian enjoyed traveling, and they lived in many states where Russ worked as an accountant.
