Oberstar set to endorse Nolan for 8th District House seat

Former Minnesota 8th District Congressman Jim Oberstar is expected to formally announce Monday his endorsement of Rick Nolan to be the Democratic challenger to U.S. Rep. Chip Cravaack in November.

Former Minnesota 8th District Congressman Jim Oberstar is expected to formally announce Monday his endorsement of Rick Nolan to be the Democratic challenger to U.S. Rep. Chip Cravaack in November.

In 2010, Cravaack, a Republican, upset Oberstar, who had represented the Northeastern Minnesota district since 1975. Cravaack is a top target for Democrats this year in a district that, until the 2010 election, had long been considered safely Democratic.

Nolan faces a primary in August against DFLers Tarryl Clark and Jeff Anderson, both who stated they would not abide by the party endorsement at the district convention in Duluth last month. Nolan won that endorsement with the blessing of many DFL stalwarts.

Nolan is also a former member of Congress, having served two terms in the late 1970s.

Nolan's campaign released an announcement late Friday that the endorsement from Oberstar would take place at 10 a.m. Monday in Chisholm at the Minnesota Museum of Mining.

The news conference will take place in the reconstructed office of Minnesota's "Iron Lady," Veda Ponikvar. She was a fighter for mining workers and longtime publisher of the Chisholm Free Press and Tribune. Ponikvar gave Oberstar his first job delivering the paper as a young man. She endorsed Nolan some months ago and will also be present. She will be presented with a cake to mark her 92nd birthday.
