Northwood School in Minong is planning to start a kindergarten program for 4-year-olds for the 2008-09 school year.

Students would be taught for a full day, two days per week at Northwood or at a child-care program based at Calvary Lutheran Church, said Josh Tomesh, Northwood School principal.

Northwood teachers currently have to catch students up to the level of their peers in the state because there are not a lot of child-care opportunities in the district, Tomesh said. A kindergarten program for 4-year-olds will allow them to focus on social skills before starting kindergarten. The program will give 4-year-olds a jump-start on their academics, Tomesh said.

The district also is expanding its regular kindergarten program from four to five days per week.

Northwood is among 32 schools in Wisconsin that will receive start-up grants for 4-year-old kindergarten programs. Northwood's grant is estimated at about $12,250.

The Hayward and Luck school districts also received startup grants estimated at $96,700 and $25,270 respectively.
