SUPERIOR -- Northwestern's Nate Nelson didn't waste much time in claiming his third consecutive championship in the Superior Wrestling Classic, held Saturday at Superior High School.
The junior notched four pins in four matches to dominate the 119-pound weight class for the second straight year. He also won the 112 title as a freshman. Nelson, whose four pins totaled 8 minutes, 17 seconds -- just over 2 minutes longer than one regulation match -- was one of five wrestlers to collect four pins in the tourney.
Shell Lake's Mike Johnson (160) was the quickest wrestler on the mat Saturday, sticking four opponents in 3:43, but the Lakers' string of three straight team titles was broken by Eau Claire Memorial. Eau Claire won the event with 178.5 points, while Shell Lake was second with 144. Ashland (133), Northwestern (132.5), Superior (126.5), Bayfield (70) and Northwood (34) rounded out the field.
Besides Nelson and Johnson, who was the 2008 champ at 152, other repeat champions included Superior's Robert Murphy at 125 and Nikola Bogojevic at 285. Northwestern's Wes and David Snow also claimed individual titles at 130 and 135, respectively.
