Saturday, Jan. 12 and Sunday, Jan. 13

  • The University of Minnesota Duluth men's hockey team tied Minnesota State-Mankato 2-2 Saturday. On Friday, the Bulldogs defeated Mankato 4-3 in overtime.
  • The UMD women's hockey team defeated Minnesota State-Mankato 5-2. On Friday, they defeated Mankato 2-1.
  • Researchers at the University of Minnesota created a beating heart in a jar, according to a Minneapolis Star Tribune report.

They used detergents to strip a rat heart from its cells, leaving behind connective tissue, which they infused with newborn rat cardiac cells.
Monday, Jan. 14

  • Gov. Tim Pawlenty announced the DECC has $40.3 million of his $1 billion plan for Minnesota public construction projects. Some of the money would help with the building of a new arena.
  • The Superior laker Walter J. McCarthy Jr. had its hull pierced by an object while backing into a slip at Superior's Hallet No. 8 Dock. The laker's engine room took on a large amount of water. No one was injured.

Tuesday, Jan. 15

  • Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney won the primary in Michigan. Hillary Clinton won the Democratic side, even though there was an incomplete ballot.
  • The St. Louis County Board voted to negotiate with former County Attorney Alan Mitchell to become interim county administrator.
  • The unemployment rate in Minnesota dropped to 4.9 percent in December from 4.4 percent in November, according to an Associated Press Report.

In the last six months, according to Tom Stinson, a state economist, 23,000 jobs have been lost. In the six months previous, there was job growth.
Wednesday, Jan. 16

  • Duluth's Air National Guard base, along with 40 other bases, has a chance to be a new home for F-35A Lightning II, according to an Air Force long-term plan.

If this were to happen, the Air National Guard Base in Duluth could have a brighter future then previously thought -- previously it had been announced that F-16s, its main aircraft, would be phased out in the near future.

  • About 10 people spoke out against the proposed clinic and assisted-living facility near Lester Park Golf Course, at a community meeting.

Buildings for the project would replace about 11 acres of land, which is currently near the back of some homes in the area.
The Duluth Planning Commission supported it by a 7-1 margin. The City Council will vote on it Jan. 28. If it's approved, the clinic would open in the fall.

Thursday, Jan. 17

  • In the early morning hours, a patrol officer noticed a smashed window of Pacek's Pharmacy at 116 W. First St. Bottles of prescription pain medication were taken.

Police did find evidence that could lead to the apprehension of the suspects.
Friday, Jan. 18

  • The Duluth Park and Recreation's Chester Bowl Semester Day Snow Festival was canceled due to frigid conditions.
