The Department of Homeland Security has awarded grants to several northern Minnesota fire departments, U.S. Rep. James Oberstar announced Wednesday.
The Mahtowa Volunteer Fire Department was awarded $13,718; the Biwabik Township First Responders $15,215; the Nevis Fire Department $38,859; and the Cass Lake Rural Fire Association $23,829.
"We will be using some of the grant money to train our first responders to the Emergency Medical Technician level," Nita Larson, Biwabik Township Clerk and First Responder, said in a news release. "We will use the remainder of the funds for needed equipment purchases."
