The Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute at Northland College in Ashland has landed a $192,000 federal grant to conduct sanitary surveys on several Chequamegon Bay beaches and shorelines.
The grant was awarded by the Environmental Protection Agency as part of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative that will target and reduce shoreline contamination in the Chequamegon Bay watershed.
The college will do the work on behalf of the Chequamegon Bay Area Partnership.
In addition to the tribal and Ashland-area beaches, water quality sampling will take place at five previously unsampled lakeshore storm-water outlets within the city of Ashland to better target contamination contributing to the degradation of area beaches.
