Nordic skiing: Duluth East's Kubek wins state title in girls pursuit race

Duluth East senior Anna Kubek won the girls 10-kilometer pursuit title today at the Minnesota high school Nordic ski meet at Giants Ridge in Biwabik.

Duluth East senior Anna Kubek won the girls 10-kilometer pursuit title today at the Minnesota high school Nordic ski meet at Giants Ridge in Biwabik.

Kubek, a former gymnast who trains in biathlon, started the classical portion of the pursuit with a 17-second lead after a strong freestyle race earlier in the day, and was never seriously challenge the rest of the way. Burnsville's Vivian Hett took second.

East was in the running for a third straight girls team title, but was narrowly edged by Wayzata. Wayzata finished with 365 points to 362 for East.

In the boys team competition, Eden Prairie took first with 378 points; Ely was second with 358.

Jakob Ellingson of Hopkins won the boys pursuit title.
