Area law enforcement officers will conduct a NightCap enhanced impaired driving campaign in St. Louis County on Friday, Feb. 13.
Officers from Minnesota State Patrol, St. Louis county sheriff's office along with the Duluth, Hermantown, Proctor and University of Minnesota Duluth police departments will have extra officers on patrol to arrest impaired drivers.
Minnesota's 15 deadliest counties for impaired driving accounted for more than half of the state's alcohol-related deaths (272) and serious injuries (762) during 2004-2006. St. Louis County ranks fifth on the list of Minnesota's deadliest counties.
Operation NightCAP (nighttime concentrated alcohol patrol) is an impaired driving prevention program designed to reduce highly preventable alcohol-related traffic deaths on Minnesota's roadways.
NightCAP efforts combine the Minnesota State Patrol, county sheriff's offices and city police departments to saturate specific roadways where impaired driving is likely. The program is funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and coordinated by the Minnesota Office of Traffic Safety.
