In one fell swoop, the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa is hoping to cut 10 percent off its current waiting list for housing.

The new 24-unit Fond du Lac Supportive Housing development celebrated its grand opening June 24, and residents were expected to start moving in this month.

In addition to townhome-style units for families, there is an apartment building with one-bedroom units and efficiencies. All of the living spaces were built using green technology and building practices. There also is a community building with a meeting room, laundry and three offices, a playground, picnic pavilion and a covered bus stop -- the reservation's first.

The "supportive" part of the housing development title means there will be social services available to those who need it, whether it's help with chemical dependency, mental illness or a child with ADHD. The housing is classified as permanent, which means people don't have to leave when they no longer require supportive services.

Individuals and families who qualify as homeless will be given priority. People also have to qualify for the housing units, which are intended for low-income residents.
