New flood relief fund ready to assist residents

Northlanders donate many pints of blood each year to their local blood banks. Now, it's time to donate to our local flood bank.

Mayor Don Ness, the United Way of Greater Duluth, and other funding partners have announced the formation of the Twin Ports Region Flood Relief Fund. The fund is intended to assist with the sudden and unmet needs of

residents whose insurance, government or personal funds are insufficient to cover rebuilding or rehabilitation of the home. The funds will be managed and administered by a regional committee.

Assistance is available to people living in all flood-impacted areas of the region. Funds will not be awarded until 60 days following the disaster. To date, the fund has collected more than $65,000 in donations from Minnesota Power, Essentia Health, Benedictine Health System, Enbridge Energy, US Bank, RBC Foundation, Delta Dental of Minnesota, and Cliffs Natural Resources, along with donations from individuals.

Fundraising is underway, with a goal of raising $1 million. Anyone may contribute at any M&I Bank location in Duluth and Superior, as well as at all US Bank locations.
