Duluth Mayor Don Ness will hold a news conference today to announce that the city will temporarily stop enforcing the eviction provisions in a controversial rental ordinance passed last year.
The ordinance has caused some problems because it limits the proximity of single-family homes that can be converted into rental units to one every 300 feet.
Ness said at a City Council meeting on Monday that since it was passed, the ordinance has had some "unintended consequences," including putting renters out on the street. The city has sent out letters telling property owners that they would need to vacate their renters if they failed to get a rental license before the ordinance was passed.
City spokesman Jeff Papas said Ness will announce that the city will not enforce the evictions until June 1, which should give the City Council ample time to review the law.
