A strong arctic cold front is forecast to sweep across the Northland late tonight and Tuesday, bringing several inches of snow, dangerously cold temperatures and strong winds that may create "near-blizzard conditions" at times, according to the National Weather Service.

A snow and blowing snow advisory is in effect for the Northland for Tuesday, and a wind chill watch has been issued for Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning.

After a chance of rain and temperatures in the mid to upper 30s today, the National Weather Service predicts about 2 inches of snow will fall starting early Tuesday morning, and winds gusting to 40 mph will create considerable drifting and blowing snow. Temperatures will plummet during the day Tuesday, falling to below zero by evening.

On Tuesday night, temperatures are forecast to fall to -25 to -35, and wind chills may near -50.

Wednesday's forecast high in Duluth is -6.
