NBC's "Today Show" will feature a segment on the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness between 7 and 8 a.m. Sunday.

Host Harry Smith traveled into the Boundary Waters on July 21 with Paul Schurke of Ely to tape the segment, which will focus on the controversy over proposed copper mining south of Ely and just outside the million-acre wilderness.

Schurke and the NBC crew traveled to Birch Lake on the Canadian border to visit with Dave and Amy Freeman of Grand Marais, who are spending a year in the wilderness to call attention to the copper mining issue. The Freemans entered the wilderness on Sept. 23, 2015, near Ely and will complete their "Year in the Wilderness" project in September.

The segment on "Today" is expected to run for five minutes, Schurke said. The show airs locally on KBJR-TV Channel 6.
