Neighborhoods across Duluth, the Northland and the nation will celebrate the 33rd annual National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 2.

The event is sponsored nationally by the National Association of Town Watch, and in Duluth by the Duluth Police Department. The department reported that it’s “a cohesive effort to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.”

Last year the department registered 53 block parties, and there were other unofficial gatherings around town. Nationwide, an estimated 37.8 million people took part in National Night Out events in more than 16,000 communities.

If you’d like to host a National Night Out event, let the department know by emailing Pam Kleinschmidt at pkleinschmidt@duluthmn.gov .
