'Movies in the Park' still fun, but rules apply

The Duluth Parks and Recreation Department has instituted a series of new guidelines for attendees to the free "Movies In The Park" Friday night movie series in Leif Erikson Park.

The Duluth Parks and Recreation Department has instituted a series of new guidelines for attendees to the free "Movies In The Park" Friday night movie series in Leif Erikson Park.

"Unfortunately, we have had recent incidents involving people coming to the park for purposes other than watching movies," Parks and Recreation Director Kathy Bergen said. "The overwhelming majority of our guests are here for family fun, but the actions of a few have forced us to create a more structured approach to the movies in the park."

Effective with the Friday, June 27, showing of "Ghostbusters," the following guidelines will be in effect to ensure family fun and safety for all:

  • Children under age 16 may not attend Movies in the Park without responsible adult supervision. As a reminder, the City of Duluth has a curfew of 11 p.m. for youth age 15 and younger.
  • Alcoholic beverages are strictly prohibited in all City parks. Anyone found with alcohol on the grounds will be removed.
  • Moviegoers are asked to bring their own folding chairs and/or blankets to Leif Erikson Park, which is reserved for them during MITP events. People involved in disruptive activity and/or who interfere with others watching the movie will be asked to leave. People involved in disruptive activity who do not leave upon request are subject to arrest.

"Movies In The Park" begins screening 15 minutes after sunset each week. For information on upcoming showings or any weather-related cancellations, call the Twin Ports Outdoor Movies Hotline at 715-392-3480 or log onto www.twinportsoutdoormovies.com .
