The United Way Day of Caring will send out volunteers Wednesday to more agencies than ever.

"In a time when agencies are in need of resources, there is nothing better than a volunteer," said United Way of Greater Duluth President Paula Reed.

Last year, more than 400 volunteers participated in 56 Duluth projects. This year, there are 73.

Each project takes anywhere from two to 20 volunteers, Reed said, and with the increase of agency participation, she expects a higher volunteer turnout Wednesday.

Already, 66 of the 80 projects in Duluth and Superior are filled with volunteers.

The Damiano Center is one agency taking part in the Day of Caring. For executive director David Benson, the day defines the purpose of their agency.

"Volunteers are the lifeblood of what we do," Benson said.

The Damiano Center will host a parking lot picnic tomorrow for the public, their contribution to the Day of Caring.

Other projects include Saving Lives, hosted by the Salvation Army Duluth, which will offer CPR lessons; and a cleanup and gardening in West Duluth's Memorial Park, hosted by United Way.

It's not too late to sign up; anyone interested in volunteering can visit the United Way of Greater Duluth Web site and decide which project they would most enjoy being part of.
