The body of a missing woman was found in Lake Superior between Washburn and Bayfield on Tuesday.

The death appears to have been accidental, the Bayfield County Sheriff's Office said.

A friend of the 60-year-old woman reported the woman missing about 4:20 p.m. Tuesday. The friend hadn't seen the woman in several days. When she went to the woman's Bay View Township home she found the woman's car, purse and cell phone, but could not locate her.

Deputies arrived at the woman's property a short time after the call and found lawn and garden tools near the edge of the property on the Lake Superior side of the owner's land. They then noticed a number of newly pruned branches and a tree pruner about 5 feet over the edge.

Deputies then descended about half the way down the 90-foot-or-higher cliff and spotted the woman's body in the lake. She was recovered with the assistance of the Washburn Fire Department and a boat of one of its members.

The woman's name is being withheld until her relatives have been notified. An autopsy will be done to determine the cause of death. Bayfield County Chief Deputy Dan Clark said it isn't known how the woman fell from the cliff.
