Minnesota woman dies after vehicle crash on the Iron Range

A Minnesota woman was fatally injured in a two-vehicle broadside crash at Highway 169 and Nichols Avenue in Mountain Iron at noon Sunday. Seven others suffered lesser injuries.

A Minnesota woman was fatally injured in a two-vehicle broadside crash at Highway 169 and Nichols Avenue in Mountain Iron at noon Sunday. Seven others suffered lesser injuries.

Shirley Daniel, 77, died after being airlifted to Duluth, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. The patrol did not immediately know Daniel's hometown.

Daniel was riding in a Toyota Sienna van driven north on County Road 109 by Kisa A. Ketola, 48, of New Brighton, Minn. According to the State Patrol, the accident happened when Ketola tried to cross Highway 169 and collided with a westbound Chevy Blazer driven by Cynthia J. Nygaard, 32, of Chisholm.

According to the Virginia Fire Department, three victims were transported by ambulance, four by private vehicles to the Virginia Regional Medical Center emergency room. Daniel was extracted from a vehicle by the Virginia Fire Rescue and was flown by helicopter to Essentia Health St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth.

All the other victims suffered minor or non-life-threatening injuries, according to the State Patrol. All were wearing seat belts, and airbags deployed in both vehicles.
