Minnesota Storytime announces the publication of 11 new reading guides -- free, easy-to-use literacy tools that contain tips for expanding the reading aloud experience through book discussion.
The reading guides are available for a variety of books for children from birth to 10 years of age; all feature the work of a Minnesota author or illustrator. Guides in Spanish, White Hmong or Green Hmong are available for books written in those languages.
"One of our goals is to help children develop a love of reading. The Minnesota Storytime reading guides provide parents, caregivers and educators the tools to make books come alive and enhance the reading experience," said Tom Fitzpatrick, Minnesota Humanities Commission (MHC) Family Literacy Senior Program Officer.
Minnesota Storytime is a collaboration of MHC and the Minnesota Library Association and part of the Humanities Commission's Family Literacy Initiatives, which, since 1991, have provided literacy teachers with training, access to educator tools and classroom materials. Other MHC literacy programs include Motheread/Fatheread curricula training, the Reading with Dad Initiative and Hmong and Somali Bilingual Initiatives.

The 11 new story guides include ones for books with Northland connections, including "Boozhoo," by Head Start of Fond du Lac; "The Borrowed Hannukah Latkes" by Duluth's Linda Glaser and "Nightlight," by Jeannine Anderson (Shoreview), Nikki Johnson (greater Duluth) and Joy Dey (greater Duluth). Another guide is for "Our Big Home," by Glaser, and one is available for "The Wolfhound," by Kristine Franklin, Hibbing.
