Minnesota AARP offers free tax help

In Duluth, AARP Tax Aide services are available at:

  • Portman Square, 46th Avenue and McCulloch, Mondays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. First come, first serve.
  • Concordia Lutheran Church, 2501 Woodland Ave., Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to noon. First come, first serve.
  • Lincoln Senior Center, 2014 W. Third St., Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. First come, first serve.
  • West Duluth American Legion, 5814 Grand Ave., Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. First come, first serve.
  • Proctor Area Community Center, 100 Pionk Drive, Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to noon. Call 727-3844 for an appointment.

Individuals who are home-bound can be served in their homes, and several traveling volunteers serve assisted living facilities and senior living apartment complexes.
Volunteer tax-preparers are all trained by the IRS in tax law. The volunteers serve mostly people over the age of 65, but you will not be asked your income nor your age in order to receive help. You do not need to be a member of AARP. The service is confidential.

It's important to bring the right documents with you, including:

  • Last year's federal and state tax returns;
  • W-2 forms from each employer;
  • 1099 forms (reports of Social Security payments);
  • For homeowners -- 2003 statement of property tax payable;
  • For renters -- 2003 certificate of rent paid;
  • Records supporting any itemized deductions, such as charitable contributions;
  • Child care provider information (name, employer, ID Social Security number);
  • Unemployment compensation documents or welfare assistance records.
