MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Recent heavy rains have caused the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District to dump 2.9 billion gallons into area waterways -- some of it untreated sewage.
It's the largest combined sewer overflow since the district's Deep Tunnel system opened in 1994.
The dumping happened June 7 through June 15.
The MMSD has estimated that overflows from the combined sewer contains about 15 percent of raw sewage.
The MMSD says they would have needed seven more Deep Tunnels to capture overflows during that time.

The Deep Tunnel system holds about 500 million gallons. Construction is underway on a 27 million gallon addition.
