Father recovers from amputation to walk daughter down the aisle

My daughter was only four days old when I got the phone call that would change my life forever. My mother called to say my father needed medical attention immediately. I packed up my fiance and daughter and headed to my parents' house in Brainerd.

When we got there I expected the worst, but it was a few days later that my father's health got worse. We took him to the emergency room and he was given antibiotics to fight a massive infection in his right leg. After being in the hospital for nearly a week, he was told he needed to have his leg amputated to stop the infection. My father agreed. The following day his leg was amputated below the knee. Within a few days he was feeling and looking better. After nearly a month in the hospital it was time to go home, and this was where life was going to get harder.

It has been a life-changing experience, not only for my father but for my family as well. When my fiance and I finally set a date to get married my family was excited, except my father, who was nervous because he was still learning how to walk with his prosthetic leg. He wanted to walk me down the aisle without a wheelchair, walker, crutches or a cane.

After hundreds of hours of therapy, hard work, some frustration and lots of determination, on March 29, 2008, my father was able to walk me down the aisle on his own two legs. It was the greatest moment of my life!

I always knew my father was my hero, but I never knew he could be my superhero. He was given a second chance at life and I've never seen somebody love a second chance as much as my father. I hope I'm able to be as great of a parent as my father has been. I love you Dad!
