Secret to staying married

We believe we are a treasure for each other. "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also," Matthew 6:21.
The first year of our courtship, Jim taught in Nokomis, Ill., and I taught in Northfield, Minn. We got to know each other very well through daily letters and a few short phone calls, which were expensive in those days. We feel this was a strong beginning to understanding each others' values and character. It was hard in a way, but God sent in the long run.
The first year we were married, Jim taught in Garden City, Minn., and I taught in Northfield -- 100 miles apart. This was also a blessing because we realized each weekend was a special time and we used it to really be with each other doing all the fun stuff like ice skating and playing tennis, which was free and exhilarating.
We feel communication and respect for each other are keys to a happy life together. Also, our strong belief in God and Jesus as our Savior has carried us through many hard times and made the good times better.
