The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources will host a public meeting in Superior later this month on the possible use of sand dredged from the Duluth and Superior harbors.

The Seaway Port Authority of Duluth has asked for DNR permission to use the sand as fill, in the production of concrete or asphalt pavement, concrete blocks or brick. Distribution would be limited to areas within

Douglas County, and any material distributed would be analyzed to confirm it is safe. The sand -- which is separated from silt and clay after dredging -- already are approved by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency for use in Minnesota.

The public meeting will run from 1-3 p.m. Aug. 25 in Room 204 of the Superior Government Center, 1316 N. 14th St.
