Meeting looks at U.S. Steel site
A public meeting is set for Thursday on the ongoing cleanup and potential redevelopment of the former U.S. Steel mill site in Duluth's Morgan Park neighborhood.
The meeting will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Morgan Park Goodfellowship Community Center at 1302 88th Ave. W. It's sponsored by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.
The steel mill closed in the early 1970s and was declared a federal Superfund site in 1983. In 1989, a formal cleanup plan identified and addressed 18 areas at the site for cleanup.
Cleanup of on-land pollution at the site is essentially completed and the property, still owned by U.S. Steel, is available for new industrial development. One idea discussed by the Duluth Seaway Port Authority would reserve the space for future large industrial projects, although none are in the works.
