Sharyn Hill and Kevin Eckholm are more than just business partners, they're mother and son. The duo owns Scenic Title and Abstract, Inc. The company has branched out to three locations in Duluth, Two Harbors and Hudson, Wis.
Scenic Title and Abstract, Inc. prides itself on being a family-owned, local company with competitive prices. They will travel to every county in Minnesota and most counties in Western Wisconsin to complete a title.
Title insurance closings make up 95 percent of their business. Scenic Title and Abstract, Inc. is well rounded; they do title searches such as abstracts, tract searches, and they also make copies of documents. The company handles title insurance involving owner's policies and lender's policies. They deal with title examinations, plat drawings, escrow services, document recordings and closings. Scenic Title and Abstract, Inc. also handles closings on new construction, residential, and commercial contracts.
While Hill and Eckholm do most of their business with real estate agents and mortgage lenders, they stress that buyers also have the right to choose which title company they want to do business with.
In 1973, when Hill and her late husband John C. Eckholm (Jack) started a title company, it was the second in the city of Duluth. A plaque in the St. Louis courthouse commemorates the late business man as a "mentor to many and a friend to all."

Hill and Eckholm opened the Scenic Title and Abstract Company with Jack's expertise in mind. The Two Harbors branch opened in October of 1999 and their Duluth store was opened in 2000. Hill's son Brian runs the third branch of Scenic Title and Abstract in Hudson, Wis.
Eckholm is very involved in community organizations that promote business growth. He knows how important it is for a business to be involved in the community, his family now has six generations born and raised in Duluth.
Eckholm is a member of Business Networking International (BNI), a networking organization where individuals from various companies gather once a week to share ideas and contacts. At BNI, "every person is a sales person and we become sales people for them" as well, says Eckholm. He is a member of both the Duluth and Two Harbors Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber of Commerce promotes the city and its businesses. Eckholm works hard to promote his family business within that venue.
In 2006, the Two Harbors Chamber of Commerce awarded Scenic Title and Abstract, Inc with the small business of the year award.
Eckholm was also a graduate of Leadership Duluth in 2006, a program that selects only 40 people to act as leaders for the Duluth area. Participants meet regularly for 12 months and as part of their membership they toured such places as UMD and St Mary's Hospital.
