Her parents are the late Charles and Blair McKelvey. His parents are Margaret "Peggy" Dean of Duluth and the late Robert Dean.

The future bride, a 1992 graduate of Phillips Exeter (N.H.) Academy, graduated from Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass., in 1996 with a bachelor's degree in philosophy and German studies and from Simmons Graduate School of Library and Information Science in Boston in 2002 with a master's degree in library science. She is a senior research librarian at the law firm of Covington and Burling LLP in Washington, D.C.

The future groom, a graduate of Duluth East High School, graduated from Carleton College in Northfield, Minn., with a bachelor's degree in international relations and from the University of Minnesota Law Center in Minneapolis with his juris doctor. He is a U.S. diplomat, chief of German affairs for the Department of State in Washington, D.C.
